Shrove Tuesday, sometimes called 'Pancake Day', is a day in February or March. Preceding Ash Wednesday. On this day you eat pancakes. Shrove comes from the word 'shrive' meaning absolve. The term Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", meaning that people give up a food that they like during lent but eat it on Ash Wednesday so you can enjoy it before you actually give it up.
I think the Shrove Tuesday we had at school was a great idea to help raise money for Caritas so the can help people in second world countries access what we think is not 'good enough' in our lifestyle. Each student brought in a gold coin donation to place in the Caritas box and receive a pancake in return. Most people got confused and started to think they were 'buying the pancakes' instead of donating. Overall I think Shrove Tuesday was an excellent idea.
